低温与高温对玻璃强度的影响是不同的，一般认为随着温度的升高会使缺限处积聚更多的应变能，增加破裂的概率。当温度高于200℃时，由于玻璃黏滞性流动增加，使微裂纹的裂口钝化，缓和了应力作用，从而使玻璃强度加大。玻璃的使用温度范围较广，温度对玻璃强度影响的机理目前尚未探明，根据在零度（-273℃）至500℃范围内的测试，强度较低点位于200℃左右。

  这里还要讲玻璃的热稳定性，即玻璃保持不破坏能经受的非常大温度差，也就是玻璃耐急冷急热的温度差。显著膨胀系数越小，其热稳定性就越好，U型玻璃的Δt约110℃左右，换句话说玻璃加热到350℃时，如果瞬时降至240℃时就会破裂。微晶玻璃因为膨胀系数较高，所以其热稳定性也高。通常急热时，玻璃表面产生压应力不易坏，而急冷时，玻璃表面产生张应力就易坏。玻璃的热稳定性还与玻璃成分、制品厚度、是否淬过火等有关。
